Club Corner Guidelines

Suggested Guidelines for Presenting information on a Village Cricket Club History for inclusion on the Club Corner Section of the Sussex Cricket Museum Website

Introduction

The Sussex Cricket Museum has recently launched a new feature on its website, entitled Club Corner, which will host potted histories of local Sussex Club sides. This guideline provides ideas of what the information should contain.

  1. Founding of the Club
    • Date of Foundation: Clearly state the exact date (or year, if the precise date is unknown) when the club was established.
    • Context of Foundation: Briefly describe the circumstances that led to the club’s formation. This might include local interest in cricket, involvement of other sports clubs, or historical events that influenced the club’s creation.
    • Founding Members: List the key individuals involved in founding the club, along with their roles (e.g., first captain, secretary).
  2. First Match Played
    • Date of the First Match: Provide the date the club played its inaugural fixture.
    • Opponents: Name the opposing team(s) and, if possible, provide a brief context about them.
    • Outcome and Notable Events: Record the result of the match and mention any memorable incidents or achievements, such as outstanding individual performances or unusual occurrences.
  3. Significant Matches at the Ground
    • International Fixtures: Highlight any occasions where the club’s ground has hosted international teams, touring sides, or representative matches.
    • County or County 2nd XI Matches: Detail appearances by county teams, county 2nd XIs, or other high-profile matches, including dates and notable players involved.
    • Other Notable Games: Include matches of special significance, such as charity games, cup finals, or unique events in the club’s history.
  4. Notable Individuals Associated with the Club
    • Famous Players: List individuals of local, national, or international renown who have played for the club, specifying their achievements and connection to the team.
    • County Cricketers: Mention any current or former county players who have club links, whether they started their careers there, played as guests, or have other strong associations.
    • Other Distinguished Members: Highlight significant contributors such as long-serving captains, volunteers, or administrators who have made a lasting impact.
  5. The Club Today: Current Status
    • Leagues Participated In: Clearly state the leagues in which the club competes at present, providing brief details on the level and structure if relevant.
    • Number of Teams: Specify how many senior teams the club runs (e.g., 1st XI, 2nd XI, Sunday XI).
    • Women’s Team: Note the existence and development of a women’s side, including any league participation or notable achievements.
    • Junior Sides: Outline the structure of the club’s youth section—mention age groups, coaching programmes, and any recent successes.
